DIY Wedding Peonies

Peonies are commonly used in weddings because the flowers have large, decorative blossoms and soft pastel colors. That makes peonies appropriate choices for wedding bouquets and reception table centerpieces. You can save money by ordering the flowers and preparing the bouquet or centerpiece yourself.

Instructions

  1. Bouquet

    • 1

Order fresh peonies in advance of the wedding date. Place them in fresh water and a cool environment. In those conditions, they will still fresh for five to 10 days.

    • 2

Use the flower clippers to trim the stems to extend 2 inches beyond where you will grasp them. Use eight to 10 stems of peonies to keep the bouquet light and easy to grasp.

    • 3

Hold two peony stems in your hand. Add more two more stems as you rotate the bouquet counterclockwise. Continue adding stems while you rotate the bouquet to avoid bunching and crushing the petals.

    • 4

Wrap the string several times around the finished bouquet to hold it in place.

    • 5

Tie the colored ribbons around the bouquet to cover the string. The ribbons should hang loosely from the stems.

    Centerpieces

    • 6

Fill each vase three-fourths full of cold water.

    • 7

Measure the length of the stems against the height of the vases. Trim the stems so the head of the flower rests against the edge of the vase.

    • 8

Place four to five peonies in the vase, one at a time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not expose the peonies to full sunlight. They will bloom too early and could wilt before the wedding.
