Breaking the handle of a trusted tool is problematic, but it happens frequently. The handle is exposed to the largest amount of strain, causing cracking or splintering, which leads to fracturing. Pitch fork handles are inserted into the fork in the same manner as shovels, rakes and other common yard tools. The wood handle inserts into a long neck attached to the tool and is secured with two or three metal rivets. Replacing the handle requires removing the rivets and securing a new piece of wood to the head of the tool.
Things You'll Need
- Metal-cutting drill bit
- Wood screw
- Screwdriver drill bit
- Spray lubricant
- Rubber mallet
- Bolts and nuts
- Replacement handle
Clamp the pitchfork to a stable surface with clamps, holding the forks without placing any pressure on the long neck.
Drill out the rivets holding the broken handle in place with a drill and metal-cutting drill bit. The drill bit must be of equal or slightly larger size than the rivets.
Pry out the broken handle. Drive a wood screw into the handle if it is broken off at the tip of the metal neck with the drill and a screwdriver drill bit to give you something to grasp when attempting to pull out the old handle.
Spray lubricant into the long neck. Insert the replacement handle into the neck and tap it into place with a rubber mallet.
Drill out the holes in the handle through the original rivet holes in the long neck with the drill bit.
Slide the bolts through the holes and attach the nuts to the ends of the bolts. Tighten the nuts down with a wrench.
Tips & Warnings
- If the tip of the replacement handle is too wide, you will have to sand it down to get the right diameter for the handle to fit into the neck. Taking the original broken handle to the hardware store may be necessary to purchase an identically-sized replacement.
