Tile is available in many sizes, from small 4-inch tiles to tiles exceeding 18 inches in length. An important part of installing tile is determining the amount of tile needed for the job. Tile is measured in square feet, however tiles sizes are labeled in inches. To determine the coverage provided by one tile and to ensure that you order the proper amount of tile to complete the installation, you must convert the tile sizes from inches to feet.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
Measure the length of the tile in inches.
Divide the total number of inches by 12 to determine the number of feet. For example, a tile measuring 18 inches in length is equivalent to 1.5 feet.
Measure the width of the tile in inches using the measuring tape, if desired.
Divide the width, in inches, by 12. For example, a tile measuring 4 inches in width is equivalent to .33 feet.
Multiply the length in feet by the width in feet to determine the square footage of one tile, in feet. For example, a tile 1.5 feet long by .33 feet wide provides .495 square feet of coverage.
