How to Protect a Speaker with Foam Surrounds

All speakers employ a "surround." This is a strip of foam, cloth or rubber that surrounds the cone of the speaker and lets the cone move forward and backward when electrical impulses are applied. Foam is a commonly used material, particularly on older or less-expensive speakers. It's lightweight and lets the cone move easily. One drawback of foam surrounds is they can be prone to deteriorate over time. With some common-sense precautions you can protect your surrounds.

Instructions

1. Keep the grille of the speaker on. A foam surround can be torn by accidental contact. The grille of your speaker will do much to protect the speaker and its surround from the ravages of accidents, pets or children.

2. Keep the speaker out of direct sunlight. Position your speakers in an area that doesn't have direct exposure to the sun since the heat and UV-rays can cause deterioration of the foam.

3. Keep your speakers in as dry an environment as possible, as moisture can contribute to foam rot. If your speakers are in a damp room, such as a poorly ventilated basement, consider purchasing a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels at a reasonable level.

4. Protect your speakers from direct contact with water. Don't use speakers designed for indoor use for extended periods outdoors or in areas liable to water exposure, such as a pool deck.
