Sealant will keep popcorn from drying out and crumbling.

Popcorn and cranberries are commonly strung together to create a colorful holiday garland. However, most popcorn and cranberry strings do not last for more than one holiday season before they begin to fall apart. Preserved cranberry and popcorn garland strings will last for multiple years without breaking apart or crumbling. To preserve a popcorn and cranberry garland string, you must prevent the food from breaking down as it naturally dries out. Preserving a popcorn and cranberry string requires only a few supplies to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your floor with a layer of newspaper. Lay the newspaper at least two sheets thick to protect your flooring.

    • 2

Lay the popcorn and cranberry string on the newspaper-covered floor. If it is too long, fold it in half or into thirds.

    • 3

Shake a can of acrylic sealant spray.

    • 4

Hold the spray can nozzle 2 inches away from the popcorn and cranberry string.

    • 5

Coat the entire exposed surface with a thin, even layer of the acrylic sealant spray.

    • 6

Allow the string to dry for 12 hours.

    • 7

Turn the string over so the coated side is facing down on the newspaper and the uncoated side is facing up.

    • 8

Repeat the sealing process and allow the popcorn and cranberry string to dry for another 12 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Handle the string gently when decorating with it to help preserve the popcorn and cranberries further.

  • Use the sealant spray in a well-ventilated area.
