How to Write a Memorial Tribute to a Loved One
You may have been asked to write a memorial tribute to a loved one for an obituary, a newsletter, or an online site. The memorial tribute usually combines general information about the deceased with personal memories. There is no set way to write it, but there are conventions. It may help if you read other memorial tributes or obituaries, but you will also want to add your own flavor; to make the tribute special to you and for your loved one.

1
Research the early life of the deceased person. You may need to speak to his older relatives if you have not known him all his life. Otherwise, use your own memories, perhaps describing the type of child he was. You could mention a little about the person's family of origin, for instance where he was born and where he came in the family; such as, "John was the eldest of three children" and also mention where he went to school.

2
Include any defining features and achievements. You could say that "Beth showed an early aptitude for music and followed her interest by studying..." If the deceased had a particular influence or role model
in her life, or if she, in turn was an influence on anyone else, include this. This presents an insight into her personality, her interests and what was important to her.

Mention the deceased person's family and friends, referring to his role in the lives of these
people. This could take the form of, "John was the person everybody turned to when they needed practical help." You could include an anecdote that illustrates what you are saying. It is acceptable to use humor, but do this in a sensitive way.

Read the tribute aloud to check that it flows well. If you feel comfortable to do so, ask a friend to do so also. Proof-read it to exclude any mistakes. Edit out any repetition.

Tips & Warnings
Keep your tribute simple and sincere. You do not need to go into great detail about particular areas of the person's life. The most important thing is to show appreciation and affection.
