Instructions

    • 1

Insert the small end of the USB cable into the port on the NOOK and insert the large end of the cable into the power adapter. Plug the adapter into an electrical socket and charge the NOOK for about 3 1/2 hours -- until the charging light goes out.

    • 2

Turn the NOOK on by pressing the power button at the top of the device. You will see the main reading screen and the touchscreen at the bottom of the device illuminate. Read eBooks on the reading screen and navigate the NOOK with the touchscreen.

    • 3

Register your NOOK -- you cannot download titles onto the NOOK until you register it. When you initially power on your NOOK, it automatically leads you through the registration process. You must create an account at the Barnes & Noble website (along with a credit card or debit card to enable eBook purchases) and then connect your NOOK with this account in order to purchase and download titles to your NOOK device.

    • 4

Swipe your finger along the touchscreen to move between "The Daily" (message center), "My Library" (your collection of content), "Shop" (search and buy new content), "Reading Now" (your current eBook), "Games" (Sudoku or chess), "Wi-Fi" (connections), "Audio" (music or audio books), "Web" (browse the Internet) and "Settings" (NOOK settings).

    • 5

Enter the "Shop" and browse for titles to add to your NOOK. Press the arrow buttons to browse content. Search for items by title, author, publisher or subject. Use the touch keyboard on the touchscreen to enter keywords for searching. View details of titles before purchase. Tap "Buy Now" to purchase a title and the credit or debit card you connected with your account will receive a charge for the title. The title will download and you can find the title in "My Library."

    • 6

Tap "My Library" on the touchscreen. Navigate the contents of your library by touching the arrow buttons, highlighting your selection and touching the "Select" button on the touchscreen. You will see the selected eBook on the reading screen. Turn pages by pressing the page turning buttons located on each side of the reading pane.

    • 7

Take your NOOK to a Barnes & Noble store to read eBooks without purchasing them. You can read a large selection of eBooks for up to one hour by browsing through titles within "Shop" and selecting the "Read in Store" option.

Tips & Warnings

  • NOOK has 2 GB of standard storage, expandable with a microSD card.

  • The NOOK reading screen does not have a backlight feature -- this means you must use an external light source to read your NOOK.

  • Do not touch the reading screen or you risk scratching it.
