How to Dye Fabrics for Quilting
Quilting is a hobby that allows a hobbyist to create a large quilt design by using multiple sections of fabric that contain various patterns or colors. Fabric of a variety of colors can be expensive to purchase, which makes dying fabric a more cost-friendly option. Dying quilt fabrics is a simple task that can be completed a few hours before you decide to piece the quilt together, allowing you to personalize the appearance of the quilt and fabrics in every way possible.
Things You'll Need
- Quilt fabric sections
- Powder dye
- Salt
- Water
- Measuring cups
- Plastic locking bags
- Plastic bowl
- Measuring spoons
- Stir spoon
- Soda ash

Pour half a cup of water in a bowl with two teaspoons of powdered dye and one tablespoon of salt in a plastic bowl.

Stir mixture to create an even color mixture.

Place fabric into the bowl, and stir around the fabric in the mixture.

Pick up the fabric with a stirring spoon and place it in the bag. Pour the liquid mixture into the bag and seal the bag.

Set bag with mixture and fabric on a flat surface. After20 minutes, add half a cup of soda ash to the mixture and re-seal bag.

Allow fabric to sit for two to three hours. Pick up the bag every 15 to 20 minutes and swoosh the fabric around within the liquid mixture using a stirring spoon to absorb more liquid into the fabric.

Remove fabric and run it through the washer and dryer.

Tips & Warnings
If you desire a deeper color, add an extra teaspoon of powder dye to the water during the mixing process. This is commonly performed when dying fabrics yellow as the mixture tends to be lighter and more difficult to absorb.
