How to Draw a Maltese Dog

How to Draw a Maltese Dog thumbnail
A Maltese dog is small and easy to draw.

As the name suggests, Maltese dogs originate from the island of Malta in the Mediterranean. Maltese dogs are small, only about 8 to 10 inches in height and 4.5 to 8 lbs. in weight. Drawing a picture of a Maltese dog is not difficult, as it involves sketching simple framework and adding details later. The drawing can be incorporated into greeting cards, used as artwork for the home, or as an activity for children and adults alike.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the basic framework of the dog. Sketch a circle for the dog's head and a horizontal oval for its body. The head should rest on the top left corner of the body.

    • 2

Sketch a wavy, curly border around the head to form the ears, jowls and chin. The jowls and chin outline should overlap onto the framework of the body that you drew earlier. This wavy border reflects the curly hair that Maltese dogs have.

    • 3

Draw two small front legs onto the left side of the body and one back leg onto the right side of the body. The right back leg is not drawn, as the angle would obscure it from view.

    • 4

Add a small, fluffy tail of the top right side of the body. The tail should be a similar shape to that of a cabbage leaf.

    • 5

Draw large eyes onto the face of the head by sketching two large horizontal ovals, each with a smaller oval inside to make the pupil. Beneath the pupil draw the smallest oval yet, which will look like a bit of light reflecting in the dog's eye. Leave both the pupil and the light spot unfilled, but fill in the rest of the eye with dark pencil.

    • 6

Add an unfilled, horizontal oval for a nose, with a slightly downward curving line just above it to show where the snout begins.

    • 7

Erase any lines that are not meant to be seen, such as the lines from the original framework.
