Throwing away plastic cat litter buckets is bad for the environment, especially when the sturdy containers can be used for many household or crafts projects. The heavy-duty handles are perfect when using the plastic cat litter buckets for storage, but can be removed if you wish to create something a bit more crafty. Once the container has served its purpose, remember to recycle the plastic according to your municipality's guidelines.
Things You'll Need
- Colorful paint and paint brush
- Permanent marker
- Contact paper
- Animal pictures, cut from magazines
- Wide, clear tape
- Needle and thread
Preparing the Container
Wash the cat litter bucket thoroughly, removing all litter or deodorant residue.
Soak the container in warm water to remove the label from the outside. You might need to scrub a little bit to remove the glue residue.
Allow the container to air dry.
Paint the outside of the cat litter bucket with colorful designs, and use to store breakable holiday ornaments.
Store old bills and receipts in the container. Mark the top, using a permanent marker, with the contents and dates.
Cover the outside of the container with decorative contact paper, and use it to store cleaning supplies in the corner of your bathroom.
Tape animal pictures to the outside of the container, and use it in your pantry to store pet treats, pet medications, food or toys.
Remove the bucket handle by holding the handle straight up, then pushing down on each side to release the metal handle from the plastic flanges. Make a small cushion by placing two pieces of fabric, cut to the size of the bucket top, back to back. Sew the edges, leaving about half of the final edge unsewn. Turn the fabric right side out and stuff with polyfill. Sew the final section together and glue the cushion to the lid. Use the container as a combination child's stool and craft container. Keep crayons, paints, construction paper and safety scissors inside.
