How to Set an Appointment With the DMV

Visitors to the DMV usually find themselves waiting in long lines especially in highly-populated cities. Avoid spending hours in your local DMV office by scheduling an appointment in advance. Collect all necessary information -- and have it at hand -- prior to scheduling an appointment.

      Go to your state's DMV online-appointment website. Many states allow appointments to be scheduled online.

      Select the type of appointment you want to schedule. These could include a driving test, written test or office visit.

      Select the office closest to your location. Schedule the appointment from the list of offices in your state.

      Enter your first and last name, permit or driver's license number, date of birth and telephone number into the corresponding fields.

      Select the appointment date. Some online systems show the first available slot at the DMV location. Some show all available dates.

      Click the submission option to reserve your appointment date. Some state's send an email verifying the appointment date, time and place.

      Call your state's DMV appointment number. This number varies per state. Find the number on your state's DMV website under contact information (see "Resources").

      Inform the DMV representative that you wish to make an appointment; specify the type of appointment or service you require. Some numbers are automated; select the option that coincides with your appointment choice.

      Provide your name, driver's license, state identification number or permit number, date of birth and contact information to the representative, or enter the required information using your phone's keypad.

      Select your local DMV office, and the preferred appointment date.
