How to Anoint My House

How to Anoint My House thumbnail
Anointing your home may help remove evil spirits.

Some people of certain faiths, such as Christianity, believe that houses hold onto the good and bad energy from those who lived there before. Sometimes this energy manifests itself in the form of spirits. If you have moved into a new home, anointing the home is believed to cast off these residual energies and spirits. Although you could hire a professional to anoint your home, if you want to do it yourself, you will need little more than some oil and a few anointing prayers.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your floors. Mop hardwood and tile floors, and vacuum carpets.

    • 2

Mix together 1/2 cup each of rosemary, whole cloves, mint leaves, mistletoe and fenugreek seeds.

    • 3

Say a blessing over the mixed herbs and 1 lb. of salt. Blessings can be found in holy books or other anointing resources. The blessing you choose depends on your religious beliefs.

    • 4

Add 2 tbsp. of salt to the herb mix. Save the remaining salt for the rest of the blessing. Place the herb and salt mix onto a piece of cheesecloth. Bring the corners of the cheesecloth together and secure them with a piece of string.

    • 5

Boil 1 gallon of water. Make a tea by adding the cheesecloth with the herb mix to the water and allow it to simmer for five to 10 minutes. Remove the cheesecloth with the herbs using tongs, and discard it. Allow the mixture to cool.

    • 6

Pour the cooled mixture into a spray bottle. Mist your floors with the mixture. If you are misting it on hardwood or tile, use a clean mop to coat the floor. If carpeting, just mist it on.

    • 7

Pour the remainder of the mixture into a bowl. Dip your finger in the bowl and use the mixture to draw a protective symbol on all four sides of window and door frames, inside and outside of the room, as well as the front and back of all mirrors. Protective symbols will vary depending on your religious affiliation. For example, you can use a cross, a Blessed Angel or a pentacle.

    • 8

Mark all entryways into the room using Step 7, except for one entrance. Face the door and say another blessing to banish evil spirits. Turn around in a circle one time around the whole room. Mark the unmarked doorway as you did the others.

    • 9

Sprinkle a line of blessed salt across the doorway.

    • 10

Continue to bless all the doorways, windows and mirrors in your home, leaving the front door for last.

    • 11

Vacuum or sweep up the salt after a minimum of 24 hours. It is preferred to leave the salt for a full seven days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Anointing blessings vary depending on your religious affiliation. Most Christian religions have a belief in spirits and proper blessing treatments. However, certain religions, such as the Catholic religion, require that anointments be performed by a professional, such as a priest.
