How to Interpret an Expression in a Mug Shot
The 44 muscles in our faces contract in specific ways to convey personality and emotion. Mug shots, although not usually the most flattering pictures, can reveal clues about a person's identity. By observing and understanding various patterns of facial expressions, you can make an educated guess about someone's mug shot. Although this is not an exact science, law enforcement personnel may use the analysis of facial expressions in an effort to gain a greater understanding of a suspect or criminal.

Look for symmetry in both sides of the facial expression. If an expression is held on one side but not the other, it may indicate that the emotion is false.

3
Look for signs of anger, which include lowering the brows and tightening the eyelids.

Tips & Warnings
Interpreting facial expressions from photographs is not foolproof. A person's true emotions often flash across the face quickly, only to be concealed moments later if the person is trying to do so. Various types of lighting and angles can also cause inaccurate interpretations.
