Open up the "Customer" menu. Select "Manage Word Templates."

Select a template style for the invoice from the list under "Templates." Select the "Modify" button from the right margin of the dialog box.

Look for a field in the Microsoft Word document that appears that is titled "Invoice #" or something similar. The purple text boxes are tags for template information that will be filled in from an invoice.

Open "Print Preview" to see the invoice template as it would print. Note whether the data entry for the invoice number comes before or after the word "Invoice."

Close the print preview page. Select the purple text box that corresponds to the data entry for the invoice number and delete it.

Type in the invoice number that you want the next invoice to print with. Use "Print Preview" to see if you should adjust the invoice number's spacing on the page.

Save the customized template. If you used a template that you don't want to save over and erase, change the template's name in the "Save As" dialog box.
