How to Clean a Dryer Vent Kit

All dryers produce a large amount of hot air that requires venting out of the house. To do so, a vent is installed behind the dryer that connects to an exhaust pipe, often located on the roof or outside wall. A vent kit, sold separately from the dryer, is required to transfer the air from the dryer to the dryer vent. After regular use, lint that passes through the dryer lint trap will enter the vent and requires clearing to allow the hot air to easily exit the house. It is recommended that you clean your vent kit at least once every two years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the wall and turn the gas valve to the "Off" position, if you have a gas dryer.

    • 2

Pull the dryer away from the wall and then locate the dryer vent kit. The vent kit is a long, thick tube connected from the rear of the dryer to a vent in the wall.

    • 3

Remove the screws securing the vent kit to the rear of the dryer and to the wall vent and then remove the vent kit. If there are no screws, cut the zip ties securing the vent kit to the dryer and vent.

    • 4

Clean the vent on the rear of the dryer, vent kit, wall vent and back of the dryer using a bush and vacuum cleaner. To clean, agitate the lint with the brush and then vacuum the lint.

    • 5

Reinstall the vent kit using the screws you originally removed. Alternatively, place the vent kit into position, then secure to both the dryer and wall vent with zip ties.
