How to Make Cedar Log Furniture

Creating your own cedar furniture is a rewarding hobby. Cedar is a good wood to create pieces because of its sweet smell, color and durability. Red cedar in particular is favored for its earthy toned wood. With practice, time and the right tools, you can create beautiful pieces of furniture to complement your home. A table is a good piece to practice your skills on.

Things You'll Need

  • Four 2-foot long 1-inch diameter cedar logs
  • Drawknife
  • Clamp
  • Log tenon maker
  • 1-foot diameter log section, 3 inches thick.
  • Radial drill press, fitted with a 2-inch bit
  • Wood glue
  • Small mallet
  • Wood stain (optional)
  • Take off as much bark from the logs as you desire using the drawknife.

  • Insert one of the 2-foot long logs into the tenon maker. Set it to create a 1 1/2-inch long and 2-inch wide tenon. Hold the log in the machine firmly until it is finished. Turn the machine off and repeat this step with the other logs, turning the machine on and off for each log you insert to prevent injuries.

  • Place the better side of the 1-foot diameter log down on a flat surface. Measure out a square centered on the top of the log and mark the corners.

  • Drill 1 1/2-inch deep holes with the radial drill press, fitted with the 2-inch bit, at the marked out corners.

  • Fill the holes with 1/4 inch of glue. Insert the four cedar logs, tenon sides down, in to the holes. Pound them down gently with a small mallet so they fit snugly.

  • Dry the table for 24 hours, left in its upside down position, or as the glue manufacturer directs for drying time.

  • Stain the wood, if desired, to a tone that suits where the furniture will go in the home.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can apply these steps to almost any other kind of cedar furniture, with different lengths of wood and structure.
  • Always be careful when handling power tools, hammers and chisels.
