1
Determine the preferred end result. For example, plan a bird, flowers or a simple square and triangle design. This will give the basics of how to make the design for the blocks. Select any preferred pattern. The easiest paper pieced quilt block patterns are made for simple block and triangle patterns, but any design is possible.

2
Draw the design scheme on a piece of paper. The blocks will differ depending on the preferred pattern. For example, a bird will have the basic bird shape in one block, small triangles for a different colored belly, a triangle for a beak in a different color and the square for the ultimate background. A simple block and triangle pattern will have a square and four triangles to form the final square size.

3
Plan the design in the middle and the square shaped around the design. The final square is always shaped around the middle design to form the ultimate square shape. Adjust the drawing as necessary, allowing a ¼ inch seam allowance.
-
4
Copy the design to the foundation paper when it is completed. The seam allowance should follow the inner design so the final product is a square shape.
