How to Make a Horse Manure Compost Bin From Pallets

Compost bins help transform unwanted materials such horse manure, dead vegetation, grass clippings and pruning material into a soil conditioner that improves lawns and gardens. Compost bins accelerate the composting process and help neutralize decomposition smells. Wooden pallets are ideal material for homemade compost bins. The slates on wooden pallets allow air to circulate freely, which can increase the degradation process, and many large stores and malls will give them away for free. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Level the ground where you would like your completed compost bin to sit. Use a shovel to make the ground level. Ensure the space you level is large enough for one of the wooden pallets to rest flat.

    • 2

Lay one wooden pallet down on the leveled ground to act as the bottom of the compost bin. Stand the four other pallets vertically in a box shape around the pallet on the ground; these will act as the compost bin's walls. Ask for additional help from friends or family to situate and hold the pallets if needed.

    • 3

Tie three of the vertical pallets together securely with strong rope at each of their upper and lower corners. Tie the last pallet to the upper and lower corners of the pallet to its left. Leave some extra slack in the rope because the last pallet will act as the hinged door to the compost bin. Loosely tie the upper right side of the last pallet to the pallet on the right. The compost bin does not need a top.

    • 4

Untie the right tie holding the front hinged door of the compost bin in place and open the compost bin. Add three parts horse manure and other brown, natural materials like dead leaves and straw to one part green material such as grass clippings and pruning material. Lightly water the material in the compost bin every time you add additional material to it. Mix the material in the compost bin once every month with a shovel.

    • 5

Use the materials in the compost bin for your lawn or garden after they become dark colored and sweet smelling.
