How to Remove Masonry Paint

Chipped or otherwise imperfect paint jobs on masonry can be both unsightly and embarrassing to homeowners. Masonry paint jobs that fade can be difficult to remove, as most methods may damage individual bricks. Popular methods of paint removal such as sandblasting or pressure-washing are not viable for masonry. Use masonry paint-removal gel and large cloth applicators to soften and remove the paint in a way that will not damage the masonry at all.

Things You'll Need

  • Masonry paint-removal gel
  • Putty knife
  • 2-by-2-foot strips of cloth
  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Stiff-bristled brush
  • Use the putty removal knife to slather a thin layer of removal gel over 2 square feet of masonry. Place the cloth strip over the gel and let it stand for a full minute. Slowly pull back the cloth. The paint should be absorbed onto the cloth.

  • Use several strips of cloth and repeat this process to remove all paint on a desired wall. Wash the cloth in warm water before reusing it to make it more effective. Go back to the portions of wall where the paint was removed.

  • Look for areas with remnants of paint, such as cracks, crevices or spotty areas. Dip the bristle brush (not a wire brush) into the warm water and scrub the areas of the masonry that still have paint on them. Continue to scrub until the wall is free of paint.
