A gun vise is used for a variety of gunsmith needs, when the weapon needs to be in a stationary and secure position. Many gun vises also double as a shooting rest used to accurately sight in the weapon on a shooting range. In order to keep a gun vise secure, the vise is typically bolted into a workbench or table. For portable gun vises and rests, weights are needed to stabilize the vise, typically in the form of heavy lead-shot bags. Adding flat weights can increase your vise stability.

Unload the weapon completely. Visually inspect the weapon to ensure no live ammunition is present.

Position the weapon in the vise and lock it down tight. Weight needs to be added after the weapon is in the vise. As all gun vises will vary, consult your owner's manual for specific instructions.

Set the vise on a table or bench. Aim the weapon at the target and sight in the bull's-eye. Make any adjustments on the vise as needed to bring the weapon on target before adding the weight.

Set the flat weight onto the vise base. All gun vises vary in design, and all flat weights will vary in measurement. Some gun vises have a ring or spike for adding flat weight; others simply have a flat base on which the weight is placed. Position the weight proportionately in relation to the base; that is, ensure that the weight is centered on the base as much as possible. Clamp the weight onto the base using a C-clamp for added security.

Setting up a bag of lead shot in the vise jaw can also increase stability when using the vise as a shooting rest.
If you're using a portable vise for a rigorous gunsmith job, the weight can be secured to the vise via a C-clamp and used to add stability when torque is required for certain jobs.
