How to Adjust the Size of the Ice Cubes in an Ice Maker

Most refrigerators are equipped with ice makers whether they have a water dispenser or not. The ice maker is set by the factory to produce a standard size ice cube without overfilling the ice maker with water. If you see that the ice maker is over-filling with water or you want differently sized cubes, it is necessary to make some adjustment. Adjusting the size of the ice cubes in an ice maker depends on the refrigerator. Most adjustment screws are hidden from view although some newer models are equipped with a user-friendly push button. Instructions

    • 1

Open the freezer door and turn off the ice maker. Most ice makers have a wire handle on the side of the unit. Lower the handle with your fingers to shut off the ice maker. Some models have an On/Off switch either on the ice maker unit or on the same side of the freezer as the ice maker. Turn the switch to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Find the ice cube size push button on the front of the ice maker if your unit uses a push button. Some models have a button clearly visible with an indicator to determine the ice cube size. Push the button until the desired size indicator is illuminated.

    • 3

Feel under the ice maker and find the notch on the bottom of the ice maker's faceplate if your unit does not have a push button. The faceplate is the part of the ice maker that faces you. There is a small notch on the bottom between the faceplate and body of the ice maker.

    • 4

Insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the notch and pry the faceplate off the ice maker. You will see two motor gears near the front center of the ice maker once you remove the faceplate.

    • 5

Examine the ice adjustment screw on the upper right. It is a screw pointing sideways with a "-" and "+" stamp above the screw.

    • 6

Turn the screw clockwise one full turn with a flat-head screwdriver to reduce the ice cube size. Turn the screw one full turn counterclockwise for larger ice cubes. Do not turn the screw more than one complete revolution.

    • 7

Push the faceplate over the front of the ice maker until it locks into place. Turn on the ice maker and allow 24 hours to pass before inspecting the ice cube size. Adjust further if necessary.
