How to Install an Oil Pump in a Chevy Pickup

The oil pump in your Chevy Pickup vehicle is used to transfer oil to the engine on a continuous basis. This helps the parts in the engine work properly by keeping them lubricated, which helps reduce friction. If the oil pump stops working the parts will no longer be lubricated and it will result in engine failure. To avoid this you should remove your damaged oil pump and install a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a car jack underneath the Chevy. Raise the vehicle off the ground. Give the vehicle further support with the use of jack stands.

    • 2

Place a drain pan underneath the oil pan. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the pan. Drain the oil from the oil pan in to the drain pan. Use a wrench to remove the bolts attached to the crossmember which is near the drain pan.

Remove the 17 bolts from the drain pan. Lift the oil pan away from the vehicle. This will give you access to the oil pump. Remove the mounting bolts from the oil pump and the drive shaft extension. Lift them both from the vehicle.

Attach a new gasket to the new oil pump. Place the pump in the vehicle and attach with the mounting bolt to a torque of 30 foot-pounds. Reattach the oil pan to the vehicle by following the removal steps in reverse.

Lower the vehicle back on to the ground. Open up the hood. Remove the cap from the engine and place oil back in to the vehicle. Turn your engine on and check that the oil pump is working correctly.
