How to Use Vinegar When Washing Cloth Diapers

Bacteria and foul odors naturally appear on the inside of cloth diapers once they have been used. Boosting your everyday laundry detergent eliminates such problems and keeps the cloth diapers looking new. Bleach will thoroughly clean the cloth diapers but it is also known to cause skin irritation, something you do not want your baby to experience. White vinegar attacks odors and bacteria just as bleach does, without irritating your child's skin or staining, or "bleaching," the diapers.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Washing machine
  • Dryer/clothesline
  • Place all of the cloth diapers you are washing inside the washing machine.

  • Pour roughly ½ cup of laundry detergent into the machine.

  • Run a "Cold" washing machine cycle. Wait until the machine enters the "Rinse" cycle.

  • Pour 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar into the machine. Continue running the washing machine until it shuts off.

  • Remove the diapers from the machine. Dry them as normal (via dryer or hanging them to dry). Inspect the diapers, and rewash them if they still smell or appear dirty.
