How to Block a Water Leak on a Painted Concrete Wall
Concrete walls, such as those in the basement below ground level, can develop water leaks. This usually occurs through cracks that develop from buildings settling or due to ground pressure. If you have a water leak on one of your concrete walls, it is possible to fix it a couple of ways, depending on how big the crack in the wall is. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sandpaper
- Brush
- Water
- Caulking
- Concrete sealant kit
- Hammer
- Matching paint

1
Sand the paint off of the leaky area and apply a bead of caulking along the leak if it is a hair line crack.
-
2
Smooth the caulk down with your finger and let it dry. It should be spread several inches past the leak on either end. Once it is dry you can paint over it. If the leak is caused by a leak that is wider than 1/4-inch, you need to use a more heavy duty sealant.

3
Brush the crack out to remove loose concrete. Use water to rinse the crack out after you brush.
-
4
Tap the plastic ports into the crack until the flat edge of them is flush with the wall. The ports are where you push the sealant into the wall. Place them 8 to 10 inches apart.
-
5
Spread over the crack with the epoxy that comes with the kit. This seals the top of the leak area so that the sealant cannot leak out when it is being pushed in.
-
6
Let the epoxy dry for a day.
-
7
Squeeze the sealant into the lowest port. Push the material into the port until you see it seeping out of the next highest port. Take the tube out of the port and move it to the next one. Cap off the first. Repeat with each port. Let this dry for two days.
-
8
Tap the ports off with the head of a hammer and fill in the holes left with sealant. Let this dry for another day.
-
9
Sand down the wall with a auto sander to remove the epoxy and smooth out any rough spots.
-
10
Brush on paint to match the rest of the wall.
