How to Extract the Diablo CD Key

Save

Like many PC games, Diablo II uses a CD key to authenticate each retail copy of the software. Without a proper CD key, players will be unable to install or reinstall Diablo II. You will need to access the Registry Editor to extract the CD key from a computer that still has Diablo II installed on it.

  • Go to the computer that has Diablo II installed on it and click the Windows "Start" button.

  • Click the "Run" program from the start menu. If you don't see the Run program listed, you can search for it using the search tool at the bottom of the menu.

  • Type "regedit" into the text bar of the Run program and press enter. This will open the Registry Editor.

  • Click on the arrow next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" in the Registry Editor. This will display a list of sub folders.

  • Click on the arrow next to the sub-folder "Software." This will display the list of software folders.

  • Click on the arrow next to the software folder labeled "Blizzard" or "Blizzard Entertainment."

  • Click on the arrow next to the sub-folder labeled "Blizzard Games."

  • Click on the arrow next to the sub-folder labeled "Diablo 2."

  • Click on the arrow next to the sub-folder labeled "ERGC." In the right hand window of the Registry Editor, you should see three columns labeled "Name," "Type" and "Data." Underneath the "name" column there should be something that says "Default." Underneath the "type" column, there should be something that says "REG_SZ." Underneath the "data" column, there should be a series of letters and numbers. This is the CD key for your copy of "Diablo 2."

  • Write down the CD key and keep it in a safe place for future reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you still have the "Diablo 2" CD case, the CD key can usually be found on the back.
  • Even though this method does not require you to edit the registry, keep in mind that you can potentially cause a lot of problems by deleting, or otherwise altering, registry keys. It's a good idea to back up any important files before accessing the registry.
