      Place the fitted hat in a pillowcase and tie the end closed. You can also put it into a protective plastic, cap-shaped cage that is sold online at sites such as Stacks and Stacks, Amazon.com and Home Trends. The cap sits inside the cage and the cage snaps closed.

      Toss the pillowcase or hat cage into the washing machine.

      Set the washing machine to wash a small load on permanent press and start it.
