How to Wash Fitted Hats in a Washing Machine

Fitted hats have no adjustable band to change the cap's size.

When you get tired of spot cleaning your fitted hat, it's time to wash it in a washing machine. Read the instructions on your hat to ensure it is machine compatible. Consider your fitted hat as a delicate item of clothing to be washed and allowed to air dry, but bear in mind that a wool hat might shrink in the washer. Unlike spot cleaning, washing it in a machine will allow the hat to be thoroughly cleansed.

Things You'll Need

• Pillowcase
• Hat cage

Instructions

1. Place the fitted hat in a pillowcase and tie the end closed. You can also put it into a protective plastic, cap-shaped cage that is sold online at sites such as Stacks and Stacks, Amazon.com and Home Trends. The cap sits inside the cage and the cage snaps closed.

2. Toss the pillowcase or hat cage into the washing machine.

3. Set the washing machine to wash a small load on permanent press and start it.

4. Add laundry detergent and close the lid. When the washer stops, remove the hat from the pillowcase or hat cage and hang it to dry.
