How to Make a Sewn Fleece Blanket
A warm blanket to cuddle under can be just what you need after a hard day or during a cold night. Fleece fabric is both soft and retains heat well, making it a sensible choice for blankets. While there are several ways to make a tied or no-sew fleece blanket, you can make a sewn fleece blanket just as practically and in less time so long as you have a sewing machine that can run both a straight and zigzag stitch. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select two fleece fabrics that coordinate with one another in color and according to your preferences for pattern. Most fleece comes 54 inches wide, so cut your fabric to 1 1/2 yards long for a child's blanket or 2 yards for a teen or adult-sized blanket.
-
2
Pair together the two coordinating pieces so the right sides of the pattern are facing inward. Pin along the edges of the fabrics to hold them together on all four sides.
-
-
3
Sew a straight stitch 1 inch in from the edges, removing the pins as you go. Sew along all four sides but leave an opening 8 inches wide along one side. Turn the entire blanket right-side-out through the opening.
-
4
Stitch the opening closed by hand. Change your machine's setting to a zigzag stitch. Sew a finishing seam along all four sides, 2 inches in from the edge of the blanket, to secure the layers in place and prevent shifting.

Tips & Warnings
The thread you use for your zigzag stitch will show on both the front and back of the blanket so choose a color that blends in with both fabrics or intentionally select a contrasting thread for added effect.
If you want fringe, pair your pieces together as in Step 2 and sew your seam 4 inches in from the edge without leaving an opening. Clip fringes into the edges 3 inches long every inch down all four sides.
