Ho to Stain Oak Plywood
If you are refinishing a piece of oak furniture, you are likely to find that part or all of the wood is not solid oak. Oak plywood is cheaper than solid oak boards and is often used to make large pieces of furniture inexpensively. An oak bookcase may have shelves or sides made of oak plywood. The plywood does not absorb stain as well as a solid oak board. In order to match the color of the stain on the solid oak boards and the oak plywood, you must stain the plywood differently.

3
Apply stain to the oak plywood with a paintbrush or roller. Allow the stain to remain on the oak plywood until the wood is the desired color. Wipe off the stain with a clean cloth.
-
4
Cover the solid oak board with stain using a paintbrush or roller, if you are staining solid oak boards to match. Wipe it off within one minute and compare the color of the plywood and solid oak board. If the colors do not match, apply stain to the solid board again and allow it to remain for a slightly longer period of time.

Continue applying and removing the stain, increasing the time the stain is allowed to remain on the board each time, until the colors match.
