How to Make an '80s Madonna Costume

Create an '80s Madonna costume by shopping for '50s-style lingerie. Madonna turned vintage-style underwear into outer wear. She wore large bows and lots of jewelry to create her always feminine look. Visit vintage clothing shops and thrift stores to find costume pieces and accessories. Buy your bracelets at a vacuum cleaner repair shop. Have fun mixing and matching looks from several different music videos.

• Temporary hair color
• Capri-length tights
• Merry-widow-style brassiere
• Crinoline
• Long cotton scarf
• Short boots

Instructions

1. Color the roots of your hair dark with temporary hair color, if you have blond hair. Color the ends of your hair blond, if you have dark hair. Spray-on color will help your hair stick up at the roots.

2. Put on a fluffy crinoline-style skirt with capri-length tights underneath. Copy the "Like a Virgin" look with a white skirt and a merry-widow-style brassier top, or the "Like a Virgin" look with a black bra topped with a loose, midriff-baring T-shirt and a short black skirt.

3. Tease your hair and tie a long cotton scarf around your head like a headband. Cotton is best for making a big, fluffy bow on one side.

4. Wear short boots with with heels. Socks just peeking over the top of the boots add to the look.

5. Wear long, dangly earrings and lots of necklaces and bracelets, including some black vacuum cleaner gaskets.
