How to Fill the Rear Shocks on a Gold Wing

The Honda Gold Wing has been in production since 1975, and the bike has had air-assisted shocks since 1980. The way you fill these shocks varies by model and year, and also depends on whether the shocks have been modified from stock or not. If you own an older Gold Wing, especially the early GL1100 from the early 1980s, it has probably been modified with some aftermarket suspension upgrades.

Things You'll Need

  • Air pump or air compressor
  • Tire pressure gauge

Instructions

  1. 1980 - 1982 Models

    • 1

Remove the right side cover to reveal the valve for the rear shocks. This looks just like a tire valve stem.

    • 2

Remove the plastic cap and apply air pressure. If using a compressor, apply pressure only briefly.

    • 3

Check the pressure using a tire gauge. It should read between 29 and 42 psi for the 1980 model, and between 35 and 57 psi for the 1981 and 1982 models.

    1982 - 1988 Models

    • 4

Open the door of the dummy tank to reveal a switch and a small electric compressor motor.

    • 5

Actuate the compressor motor until the shocks have the desired pressure.

    • 6

Check the pressure on the supplied gauge to ensure that it is not greater than 60 psi.

    1988 - 2000 Models

    • 7

Locate the automatic air shock controls on the right handlebar.

    • 8

Actuate the control button, either with the key in the accessory position or with the bike running. Press the up arrow to fill the shocks, the down arrow to air them down.

    • 9

Check pressure on the gauge on the LCD display, ensuring that the pressure is in the acceptable range. The gauge has bars similar to the fuel gauge to indicate pressure levels. Do not exceed the full level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rear shocks on the newer GL1800 Gold Wing are automated, although they can be manually adjusted from the dash using rider controls.
