How to Prep New Pressure Treated Wood for Staining

Pressure treated wood is exposed to chemicals which preserve the wood and protect against rot. This pressure treated wood is typically used on decks and other outdoor buildings. When staining or painting this wood, a few special steps are taken. The most important is using stain or paint made for pressure treated wood. This is a slightly different type of paint designed to adhere to this special wood type. Many of the other preparation steps are taken for other types of outdoor wood painting as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the pressure treated wood with water and a stiff brush, removing all dirt and grease from the surface. Allow the wood to dry completely. This will take at least a few hours or more if you live in a humid climate.

    • 2

Mix up a deck preparation solution designed to clean and prepare pressure treated wood for painting. Follow the mixing directions carefully as listed on the product. Usually, this involves mixing the solution with water. Wet down the wood and apply the solution with a brush. Cover the entire surface of the wood.

    • 3

Scrub the wood with a bristle brush. Rinse the solution off of the wood with a pressure washer or a hose that has clean water.

    • 4

Allow the wood to dry again before applying your pressure treated wood stain or paint with a brush or roller. Many pressurized wood stains require a moisture content of 15 percent or less before staining.
