Locate your hot water tank or other water heating unit. The tank usually will be in a room close to your primary bathroom or in a room or cupboard nearby.

Locate any "On-Off" control on your water heating unit and ensure that this control is in the "On" position. Locate the thermostat control dial on your water heating unit and turn this dial clockwise until it is set to its highest setting.

Wait for the water to reach a boiling point. It will take about two hours for water in a 40-gallon tank to reach a boiling point. Locate the nearest hot water faucet to the water heating unit and ensure that the sink or bath underneath it is empty and unplugged.

4
Twist the faucet handle fully, usually in a counterclockwise direction, to allow hot water to exit. Or, on a mixer-type faucet, swivel the mixer handle fully to the hot water side, usually to the left, and lift it fully upward. Steam will begin coming out of the faucet after about 10 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
Turn off your faucet and wait one hour before trying again if your faucet does not produce steam about 10 seconds after you turn it on. The water needs longer to heat up.
Put your hand, or any other part of your body, under cold water immediately should you scald it. Seek medical attention for severe burns.
Wrap your hand in a damp towel when turning off a steaming faucet.
Leaving the thermostat of your water heating unit at its highest setting increases the risk of damage to the unit and possible injury to inhabitants of the house.
Both boiling water and steam can cause severe burns and scalds. Exercise extreme caution and lower the temperature of your water should you have young children.
