Making the Clothes
-
1
Acquire a solid-colored dress. The outfit can be purchased or handmade. Ichigo, the main character with the most popular costume, dresses in all pink.
-
2
Not all glues are created equally. Make sure you are using fabric glue specifically. Line the entire neckline of the dress and the hem with a half-inch ribbon that is the same color as the dress, but a few shades darker (if your dress is pink, use a rose-colored ribbon). Attach the ribbon to the dress with fabric glue. Using this adhesive is a quick and simple way to add decor to your costume without using a needle and thread.

A solid-colored ribbon is an inexpensive way to add trim and decor to this costume. Cut two pieces of ribbon that are just long enough to wrap around your arm just above your bicep. These will be the Mew Mew arm bands. Attach small velcro squares to each end so that you can take the arm bands on and off.
-
4
Cut one piece of ribbon that is large enough to wrap around your neck. Apply small pieces of velcro to each side and fasten the ribbon to your neck to make a choker necklace.
-
5
Put on the solid-colored heels or boots, gloves, and wig. Each Mew Mew character has a monochromatic scheme with various accessories. Search for photos of the cast to ensure that the details of your costume are accurate.
Making the Tail
-
6
Purchase approximately a yard of fuzzy material that resembles brown fur. Cut a 5-inch by 3/4-yard rectangle. This will be the tail for the costume.
-
7
Fold the fuzzy fabric length-wise so that the fur faces itself. Sew the fabric down the long side and around the tip, leaving an opening on one of the shorter sides.
-
8
Flip the tube of fabric inside-out so that the fur is facing outwards. This should now resemble a fuzzy, brown tail. Insert a small amount of crafting stuffing into the tail to make it plush.
-
9
Sew the open end of the tail to the inside-back of the dress. If this feels uncomfortable, you can also sew it onto a pair of shorts that you can wear underneath the dress.
-
10
Tie a large piece of ribbon into a bow near the end of the tail.
Making the Ears
-
11
Cut out four small triangles from the fuzzy fabric. These pieces will serve as the ears.
-
12
Place two triangles on top of each other, fabric facing inward. Sew along the top two edges of the triangles, leaving the base open. Flip it inside-out and repeat with the other two triangles.
-
13
Insert a small bit of stuffing into the triangles and sew the edges up. The triangles should now look like four cat ears.
-
14
When sewing the ears to the headband, try curving them inwards to create a realistic cat ear shape. Sew the cat ears to a headband. If the headband is plastic, wrap the thread around the headband. If the ears are sagging, they might need more stuffing.

Tips & Warnings
For a stiffer tail, insert a coathanger and padding into the tail before sewing it into the dress.
