How to Customize Your Graduation Invitations

Although your graduation probably involves hundreds of other students, all dressed in the same style of cap and gown, your graduation invitations do not have to look like all of the others. Customize your invitations with details that show school spirit and fit your personality. You can either start with pre-printed graduation invitations, which schools often sell to students, or make your own custom invitations from scratch.

Instructions

  1. Pre-Printed Invitations

    • 1

Order pre-printed invitations with your preferred design and purchase name cards with the invitations. These name cards usually measure about 2 inches by 4 inches and contain the graduate's full name.

    • 2

Punch a hole in the corner of each of the name cards.

    • 3

Measure the width of the invitation, multiply it by two and add 6 inches. For example, if the invitation is 4-1/2 inches wide, multiply to get 9 inches and add 6 to get 15 inches.

    • 4

Cut pieces of ribbon with a length corresponding to the above measurement. The ribbon should contain at least one of the school colors. You will need one ribbon for each invitation.

    • 5

Thread a name card onto each piece of ribbon. The card should be about 4 inches from one of the ribbon ends.

    • 6

Loop a ribbon around each invitation and tie the ends in a bow. Orient the name card so that the graduate's name is visible and positioned on the front of the invitation.

    Homemade Invitations

    • 7

Choose a recent photo of the graduate. This could be the professional senior photo, a photo of the graduate wearing a sports uniform or just a favorite snapshot.

    • 8

Print the photos so that they measure about 2 inches by 3 inches. Use your home computer to print them or take them to a photo processing center and print two to each 4-inch by 6-inch photo.

    • 9

Select card stock that is the darker of the school colors. Cut the card stock into rectangles measuring 4-1/4 by 5-1/2 inches, which is four rectangles per letter-sized sheet.

    • 10

Type the invitation for the graduation ceremony or party in a word processing program. Include the student's name in the invitation text. Lay it out so it fits in a rectangle measuring 2-1/2 inches wide and 3-1/2 inches tall.

    • 11

Print the graduation invitations on card stock that matches the lighter of the school colors.

    • 12

Glue the photo and invitation information side-by-side on the dark-colored stock card. Allow glue to dry before inserting the invitation in an envelope.
