How to Arrange Things in Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets often become a jumbled mess, with out-of-date food and items shoved to the back. Bacteria and mold growth are a hazard, and any contaminated food must be immediately discarded. Rodents will also be attracted to messy areas and will keep returning if they find a regular food supply. Reducing clutter and unwanted items will provide more free space in your kitchen cabinets, and you will be able to find items more easily. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the cabinets, and wipe down the shelves with a nontoxic kitchen cleaner and an absorbent cloth.

    • 2

Throw out any out-of-date food, and give away anything you do not really need, such as extra pots and pans or dishes you don't like. Donate nonperishable food that you know you won't eat to charities, and throw out or recycle chipped glassware and plates and plasticware with missing lids. Cabinets will be easier to manage with less clutter.

    • 3

Place food items back in cabinets in date order. Line up items such as canned food so the oldest is nearest the front and used first. Place cookware, bakeware, dishware and glassware back in according to size and weight, with taller items in the back and heavier items toward the bottom. Place frequently used items in the front.

    • 4

Group items together. Keep items such as pasta on one shelf and cooking ingredients such as flour or sugar on another shelf. Put all bakeware and cookware together, and put all dishware and glassware together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use spice racks inside the cabinets for small jars and pots.

  • Continue to keep the cabinets arranged in order. Constantly throwing away out-of-date food will be costly over time.
