How to Troubleshoot a Kawasaki 700 V-Force


Combining utilitarian features with power and speed, Kawasaki's V-Force 700 debuted in 2004 as a sport quad that could also handle the challenges of the trails. Equipped with a 697 cc, 49 horsepower engine and a rugged suspension system, professional reviewers at noted that there were few riders that this quad would not accommodate. Known technically as the KFX700, the ATV did require regular maintenance and repairs to keep it running properly. Kawasaki included troubleshooting tips in its owner's manual to guide users through potential problems.

Things You'll Need

  • 30A fuse
  • Standard wrench
  • Solution of one tablespoon of baking soda and one cup of water
  • Wire-bristle brush
  • Gasoline (unleaded)
  • Spark plug wrench
  • NGK CR7E or DENSO U22ESR-N spark plugs
  • Spark plug gap tool
  • SAE 10W-40 engine oil
  • 50 percent water, 50 percent permanent-type coolant solution


  • Operate the electric starter. If it won't work and the engine will not turn over, check the engine stop switch first, located on the left handlebar. Ensure that it is turned to "ON." Otherwise, the starter cannot work.

  • Check the condition of the main fuse, located on the left side of the KFX700 underneath the seat. If the connection in the center of the fuse looks burnt or incomplete, replace with a new 30A fuse.

  • Remove the battery, located on the front-left side of the V-Force underneath the operator's seat. Do this by first removing the seat and loosening the bolts on the battery holder using a standard wrench. Disconnect the negative cable first, followed by the positive cable and lift the battery carefully out of the case.

  • Inspect battery connections. Clean with a solution of one tablespoon baking soda and one cup of water if they are dirty.

  • Scrape any corrosion on the battery connections away using a wire-bristle brush.

  • Charge the battery to 12 volts, using a separately-powered battery charger. Kawasaki recommends the OptiMate III, the Yuasa 1.5 Amp Automatic Charger, or the Battery Mate 150-9.

  • Reinstall the battery by reversing the removal instructions listed above, taking care to connect the positive cable first and the negative cable second. Operate the starter again. If it still won't work, take the 700 V-Force to a certified dealer for repairs.


  • Check fuel levels if engine turns over but won't start or if the engine misfires or loses power. If the fuel tank is empty, refill with unleaded gasoline and restart the engine.

  • Inspect the condition of fuel if the tank contains adequate amounts of fuel. If the gasoline seems watery or gummy, it may be contaminated. Take the quad to a Kawasaki dealer to have the mechanic drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh gasoline.

  • Remove and inspect the quad's two spark plugs, located in the KFX700's front and rear cylinders. Do this by first removing cylinder covers and spark plug cap for each. Then, using a spark plug wrench, rotate each plug counterclockwise and pull outward to remove.

  • Clean the spark plugs with a wire-bristle brush if they are oily or have carbon build-up.

  • Replace the spark plugs if the electrodes are corroded, brittle and white, burnt, or cracked. Kawasaki recommends only NGK CR7E or DENSO U22ESR-N plugs.

  • Set the spark plug gap for each plug to 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.032 inches). To widen this gap, use a spark plug gap tool to gently elongate the hook on the end of each electrode. To shorten the gap, simply press the hook end gently against a flat, firm surface.

  • Reinstall the spark plugs using the spark plug wrench and restart the engine. Take the quad to the shop if the engine still does not operate properly.


  • Ensure that the operator of the 700 V-Force does not idle or ride at low speeds for extended periods of time, as this can cause the quad's engine to overheat.

  • Remove the spark plugs as detailed above and ensure that only NGK CR7E or DENSO U22ESR-N plugs are installed. Replace if any other kind of spark plug is installed.

  • Check the engine oil level. First, ensure that the KFX700 is situated on level ground. Unscrew the oil filler plug, located next to the quad's engine and wipe the dipstick clean with a cloth. Reinsert the dipstick and remove it again. The oil mark should be between the "H" and "L" lines on the dipstick. If the engine oil is low, add SAE 10W-40 viscosity engine oil.

  • Check coolant levels in the reserve tank, located at the base of the handlebars on the right side of the 700 V-Force. If coolant level is lower than the lowest mark on the side of the tank, refill with Kawasaki's recommended solution of 50 percent water and 50 percent permanent-type coolant.

  • Restart the quad. Take it to a Kawasaki dealer if the engine continues to overheat.

  • Only a skilled mechanic or Kawasaki dealer should attempt complex repairs.
  • Avoid smoking or open flames while handling fuel, as gasoline emits explosive flames.
  • Battery acid can burn skin and eyes. Wear gloves and goggles to avoid burns.
