How to Open a Broken Glove Box

by Cassie Skelley

A glove box can break when the screw in the actuator assembly is damaged or dislodged. A broken glove box can be frustrating, especially when trying to reach important documents such as insurance cards and other paper work. If your glove box is broken and won't open, you can fix the issue in a few simple steps.

Step 1

Use a drill to make a hole 1/8 of an inch (225 mm) from the right hand side of the glove compartment and about 10 to 11 mm from the top edge where the face of the glove compartment begins. Push a metal coat hanger through the hole to try and snag the release. Pull on the glove box handle when doing this to open the glove box compartment.

Step 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screw from the inside of the glove compartment.

Step 3

Drill a hole to fit the size of the screw needed for the actuator. Insert a screw by wiggling it into place.
