Ralph Lauren Faux Painting Techniques

Measuring and Taping

Measure the area you intend to paint by placing a measuring tape on one end of the wall and stretching it horizontally across the wall until you reach the other end.

Record the measurement and then divide it into equal parts. Ralph Lauren Home recommends working with sections that are 42 inches wide.

Use a pencil to mark each section on the wall and then use a level to draw a straight, vertical line from the top of the wall to the floor.

Place 2-inch painter's tape along the edge of each section.

Tape around the ceiling, floor trim, windows, and anything else that needs a clean edge.
Techniques

Create Ralph Lauren's Indigo Denim look by covering walls with two semi-gloss base coats and then applying a tinted translucent glaze over it. Finally, use the Ralph Lauren Denim Weaver Brush and the Check Roller to create a finish reminiscent of a soft, worn pair of jeans.

Achieve the Natural Linen look by using the Ralph Lauren Linen Weaver Brush. First apply two semi-gloss base coats and then a tinted translucent glaze. Then work in the linen technique to achieve the faux-finish look of linen on your walls.

Prepare walls with two eggshell base coats and tinted translucent glaze to give them an Antiqued Leather finish. You can achieve the look of worn leather by using a tool called a stippler. This technique does not require a perfectly smooth work surface.

Use ragging, sponging or color-washing techniques to add depth and texture to walls. Each of these techniques requires the use of Ralph Lauren base coats and glaze and will produce similar results. Ragging requires the use of a rag-roller. Sponging produces a bit of a subtler texture with the use of a sponge. Color-washing is the subtlest texture of all three and is achieved by using complementary hues of a color.

Make new walls appear old and worn by applying one of Ralph Lauren's Aging tints or stains.

Create the Bright Canvas look of a painter's blank canvas by applying two semi-gloss base coats and tinted translucent glaze. Work a woven pattern into the wet glaze using the Ralph Lauren Weaver Brush.
