How to Fish in a Farm Pond

How to Fish in a Farm Pond thumbnail
Farm ponds are productive fisheries.

Farm ponds can be productive fisheries and the fishing is typically less technical than in public waters. The private area limits anglers from access and the fish are not conditioned to inspect and reject lures and flies. The species that inhabit the pond will depend on the location, but it is normal to find bass and bluegill. Farm ponds in colder climates will also hold trout and pike. Fishing the ponds requires a strategic approach, but the fish are not normally selective and can be caught using a variety of techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach the pond in a manner that will prevent your shadow from covering the water. Farm pond fish are not immune to predators, and if it appears that a predator is present, the fish will hide and become difficult to catch.

    • 2

Look for structures in the pond. Farm ponds are rarely disturbed, and they will form permanent weed beds, log jams and debris piles. Fish lures and flies against the edges of the structure to draw fish into the open.

    • 3

Use natural cover to conceal your presence and to locate fish. Farm ponds are often out in the open, and any structure on the bank will create shade and a sense of safety for the fish. Fish along the edge of the shade lines because the fish will use it to control their temperature.

    • 4

Fish close to the banks. Many farm ponds are deep along the bank and the vegetation above the bank is not groomed. Fish will hold in tight and wait for insects and rodents to fall from the vegetation.

    • 5

Use big flies and lures. Lures that are noisy are also effective. Farm pond fish do not see a large variety of flies and lures and the biggest fish will respond to the commotion. The smaller fish may be frightened by the large lures and you should use a smaller imitation if success is not immediate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Concentrate your efforts during the summer months for warm-water species and during the spring and fall for cold-water species.

  • Always gain permission from the landowner before fishing the pond. You will be trespassing without permission.
