However, in some instances the MSN Messenger application displays connection errors or simply does not connect to the MSN Messenger service. Change configurations on your firewall to enable the MSN Messenger application to connect to the MSN Messenger service.

      Log into your computer using the user name and password of an account with Administrator permissions on the computer.

      Click the "Start" or "Globe" button, then click "Control Panel" and double-click "Windows Firewall" in the window that appears.

      Click the "Allow a program through the Firewall" link and then click the "Change Settings" button in the "Allow programs to communicate through Windows Firewall" window.

      Click on the box next to the "MSN Messenger" program and click the check boxes in the "Home/Work (Private)" and "Public" columns. If MSN Messenger is not in the list of programs, click the "Allow another program" button, click on the "MSN Messenger" program in the list displayed, click the "Add" button, and then click the check boxes next to "MSN Messenger" and the "Home/Work (Private)" and "Public" columns in the same row.

      Click the "OK" button to save the exception.
