How to Plan a University 50th Class Reunion
A 50th university class reunion is a special occasion to meet your old friends, relive college memories and revive bonds of friendship. This is also an opportunity to thank your university and old friends that have helped shape your life. Start planning for your 50th reunion at least eight months before and as early as one year in case you are planning a large event. Planning ahead allows alumni visiting from abroad enough time to make themselves available for the reunion and ensures you have ample time to organize a successful reunion.

1
Contact the Alumni Relations Office of your university and let them know that you are planning a reunion. They can help you with reunion funding, contact updates on old students and other aspects related to reunion planning.
-
2
Make a list of audience for the reunion. Decide if you want to invite students along with their partners or students alone. You may also want to extend invitation to former faculty members. Obtain the addresses of alumni from your university.
-
-
3
Set a date for the reunion. Decide whether you want to set a date that falls on weekdays, weekends or public holidays. Check if your date coincides with a special public event that may affect the reunion.
-
4
Choose a venue for the reunion at least eight months ahead. Consider choosing a location that is close to your university, but mostly go for one that is the most affordable for your audience. The location should leave you with enough finances to afford other events for the reunion. Take into account factors such as transportation facilities, accommodation availability and venue facilities such as cleaning and wait staff, sound and lighting systems.
-
5
Decide the style of your event. Is it going to be a formal event with speeches, formal dress codes or an informal theme-based and dinner event? If you are looking to include a guest speaker, what will be the topic of the speech? If you want to invite a high-profile speaker from abroad, you would have to look into details such as expenses for transport and accommodation from overseas. You could approach your university lecturers and ask them to be guest speakers.
-
6
Prepare the budget for your reunion. Include ticket sales and any funding support from your university under income. Your expenses would include venue, catering, entertainment activities and photographer fees.
-
7
Prepare invitations. Include key information such as the date, place and time of reunion, dress code and the name of the reunion organizer. Send out the invitations two to four months ahead. Email is an affordable and convenient option to send invitations. The Alumni Relations Office usually assists with invitation emailing. Offer regular updates on the event through your university website.
-
8
Publicize the reunion event in newspapers and university publications including magazines, bulletins and official website. This way, you may even get in touch with an old student who you had not been able to trace earlier.
