How to Become an FBI SWAT

Save

There's an extensive selection process to become a member of the FBI's elite SWAT (special weapons and tactics) teams. Each team is based out of a different city and trains for long hours. Many operators have field or military experience. You must be a special agent with the FBI in good standing, be able to pass rigorous physical demands and be mentally sound.

  • Apply for a position with the FBI as a special agent. You must apply for an open position on the USA Jobs website. Once you're selected, you must serve at least two years as a special agent and be in good standing with the FBI.

  • Volunteer for the SWAT team selection process. You must complete a pistol qualification course, physical fitness test, combatives assessment, problem-solving and arrest scenarios, a psychological evaluation and interviews. SWAT team members are chosen by the field office career board based on performance during the selection process.

  • Complete the SWAT and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) basic courses and other required courses, once chosen for the SWAT. Once these are complete, you're a member of the SWAT team.
