How to Become an FBI SWAT

You must pass a pistol qualification test to become a SWAT team member.

There's an extensive selection process to become a member of the FBI's elite SWAT (special weapons and tactics) teams. Each team is based out of a different city and trains for long hours. Many operators have field or military experience. You must be a special agent with the FBI in good standing, be able to pass rigorous physical demands and be mentally sound.

Instructions

1. Apply for a position with the FBI as a special agent. You must apply for an open position on the USA Jobs website. Once you're selected, you must serve at least two years as a special agent and be in good standing with the FBI.

2. Volunteer for the SWAT team selection process. You must complete a pistol qualification course, physical fitness test, combatives assessment, problem-solving and arrest scenarios, a psychological evaluation and interviews. SWAT team members are chosen by the field office career board based on performance during the selection process.

3. Complete the SWAT and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) basic courses and other required courses, once chosen for the SWAT. Once these are complete, you're a member of the SWAT team.
