How to Fix Fuzzy Photos

How to Fix Fuzzy Photos thumbnail
A fuzzy photo doesn't need to be a bad photo.

Fuzzy photos are the bane of any photographer's life, but that priceless memory need not be written off immediately. Adobe Photoshop comes equipped with a variety of tools that can improve or even save an image. If you don't have Photoshop, many similar programs work in much the same way.

Things You'll Need

  • Digital camera
  • Image editing software

Instructions

    • 1

Open your picture with the editing software. Size your image to have as high a resolution as possible, so that you have more pixels to work with. Do not resize your image until you have finished editing, or you will lose some of those vital pixels.

    • 2

Go to the "Filter" option in the main toolbar if you are using Photoshop. Select the "Sharpen" tool. This automatically sharpens your entire image and if your photo is only slightly fuzzy this may be all that is needed.

    • 3

Try the "Sharpen Edges" tool if you think your image requires more work. This tool adds darker tones to the edges of objects, so the objects appear sharper.

    • 4

Return to the "Filter" drop-down menu and select the "Unsharp Mask" tool. This presents you with a preview window. As you increase the radius and threshold settings you can observe the effects these changes will have on your picture before applying them.

    • 5

Select the "Smart Sharpen" tool, which will do much of the work for you. Then go to the "Remove" drop-down menu. Here you will see three options to remove Gaussian Blur, Lens Blur and Motion Blur. Experiment with these to see how your picture improves.

    • 6

Resize the image. Select the "Crop" tool on the editing toolbar and enter the height and width that you desire. Drag a box around the entire image -- or the section that you particularly want -- and hit "Return." Your picture will now be cropped and resized.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mount your camera on a tripod or wall or increase the shutter speed to reduce blurring.

  • For any image you open in Photoshop, hit "Ctrl+Shift+L." This activates "Auto Contrast," which will calculate the optimum contrast for your photo.

  • Cropping a photo so that it is smaller makes blurring less noticeable. If you began with a high-resolution image you will still be able to keep it reasonably sized.

  • Save a copy of the original before you begin, in case you make a mistake or aren't happy with the results.
