How to Remove the Cover on an Ecotech 2.4 Engine

by Leonardo R. Grabkowski

The Ecotec 2.4L engine comes in a number of General Motors' vehicles, including the Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac Solstice and Pontiac G6. Under the hood you'll find a plastic engine cover. This cover protects the spark plugs and other vital engine components. To access parts of the engine for maintenance, you'll need to remove the cover. Removing the cover is easy as it's not attached by screws or bolts, but by simple snapping clips.

Step 1

Turn off your car's engine. Find the hood release beneath the steering wheel and pull it to unlock the hood.

Step 2

Approach the front of the hood. Push the hood latch to open the hood, and then lift it up to support it. Models with automatic struts will leave the hood supported automatically. If your car doesn't have automatic struts, lift the hood support rod to support the hood.

Step 3

Find the engine cover. The engine cover on the Ecotec 2.4L engine is labeled "Ecotec." It's in the center of the engine compartment. You'll see the oil cap either on its bottom, or in the center of it, depending on the vehicle.

Step 4

Twist the oil cap counterclockwise to remove it. Place the oil cap on a clean towel or cloth to protect it from contaminants.

Step 5

Grasp the left and right sides of the Ecotec's engine cover. Lift it upward to remove it from the engine. To reinstall it, put it in its place and push it down firmly.
