How to Find the Special Hotel in Europe

How to Find the Special Hotel in Europe thumbnail
Europe is loaded with special places to visit and nearby hotels.

Anyone can find a hotel with a chain name attached to it, like Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott. While these hotels are comfortable and you know what you will get, sometimes special trips call for that special hotel. It doesn't have to be glamorous. You may be on the lookout for an out-of-the-way place. It could be a hotel where you want to propose or share a special time. Finding that "special" hotel in Europe can be easier than you'd think.

Instructions

Visit common travel websites. Even though Travelocity, Hotwire and Orbitz mainly feature the chain hotels popular in the United States and Canada, there are times when these sites list the four and five-star properties of renowned independent hotels. These properties won't have a brand name or trademark next to them.

Go to websites that deal with European hotels. Epoque, Travel Intelligence and Venere are three sites where European hotels are featured, including bed and breakfasts. The B&B's in Europe are quaint and charming, much like American B&B's and are located in older houses. Besides, that "special" hotel may not even be officially a hotel.

If you zero in on a specific hotel, the hotel will likely have a website where pictures of the accommodations, its rooms, and the outdoor area surrounding it are displayed. This is where you can find out about special amenities or packages like "romance for two" or "breakfast in bed."

Although travel agents' jobs have been taken over somewhat by the better known websites, it's worth a call to an agent to see if he knows of any special places. The Web is good for finding hotels in mass quantities, but an individual person can find those special nuances.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on what time of year you take the vacation, that special hotel may be priced just right. During peak travel seasons, hotels usually charge higher prices, even if specials may be available. Off-peak times are when chain and non-chain hotels get creative, so keep checking on prices. That special rate is just around the corner.
