How to Make a Ladybug Costume for a Tween Girl

How to Make a Ladybug Costume for a Tween Girl thumbnail
You can never be too old to love ladybugs.

Many tween girls enjoy dressing up on Halloween and other occasions. A ladybug costume is a simple costume to make and your tween can even help you make the costume. You can make a semi-realistic ladybug costume for your tween girl with readily-available craft supplies from a local craft or fabric store. This project will take about three hours to complete; allot enough time to complete the project before your tween girl must wear the costume.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the girl's back. Add four inches to this measurement and draw a circle onto a piece of cardboard that has a diameter of this measurement. Cut out the circle when the drawing is complete.

    • 2

Cut one circle from red felt and one circle from black felt that are 1-inch larger in diameter than the cardboard circle. Sew the two circles together, leaving the bottom edge of the circle open. Turn the circles right side out.

    • 3

Cut four holes 1/4 of an inch wide in the middle of the cardboard. Space the holes evenly with two on the top line and two on the bottom. Space the holes to align with the edges of the child's back. Stuff the cardboard circle between the two circles.

    • 4

Poke four holes through the black felt to line up with the holes in the cardboard. Thread two long pieces of elastic through the holes. Thread one piece through the top two holes and another through the bottom holes. Tie a large knot in the elastic pieces where they meet the cardboard so that they cannot be pulled out.

    • 5

Stuff the red side of the ladybug back with stuffing to make it have a round shape. Sew the opening on the bottom of the shell closed.

    • 6

Cut black circles from felt and glue them to the red part of the costume. Glue a thin black strip in the middle of the red circle to make two wings.

    • 7

Glue one pom-pom to two separate pipe cleaners. Sew the pipe cleaners to the front brim of the beanie hat.

    • 8

Have the girl wear a black shirt and black pants. Tie the ladybug back in place with the elastic ties. Have the girl wear the black hat. If desired, give the girl black gloves to wear.
