How to Get a Job Washing Cars at a Dealer

Save

If you have experience washing cars, whether it's washing cars in your community as an entrepreneur or at a local car wash, and want to work in a more professional environment, you can try to apply for a position at a dealership. Car dealerships need reliable and skilled car washers for cleaning cars in preparation for the selling floor and before releasing cars to new buyers.

  • List all experience you have in the car washing business along with the length of time you've spent at each job. Also note if you've worked in any other capacity in the car business, such as for a mechanic or body repair shop.

  • Identify the specific car washing duties you have experience with. That may include detailing the interior, washing, polishing, waxing, drying and cleaning the upholstery of a car. Highlight experience you have operating automated car washing equipment.

  • Get your high school diploma or GED in advance of applying for a car washing job at a dealership. Many hiring managers prefer applicants who have a high school diploma or equivalent education for this type of position.

  • Create a one-page resume listing all of the details you've compiled about your knowledge, training and experience in the field. List references from previous car washing or car-related jobs that you've held.

  • Compile a listing of dealerships in your area within comfortable traveling distance. Set aside a day to visit each dealership in person, dressed professionally, to speak with the manager regarding open car washer positions.

  • Briefly describe your experience and training to the manager. Explain your interest in specific car washing duties or in all types of car washing jobs available. Leave a copy of your resume and fill out an application with each dealership, even if the company isn't hiring at that time.
