How to Wash Polo Sweaters

Polo is a style of clothing that mixes casual materials such as jersey and lightweight wool with a more formal structure such as collars and buttons. Polo sweaters are woven versions of polo shirts. The sweaters are versatile: You can wear them to dress up jeans or to dress down black dress pants. Properly caring for polo sweaters will help keep them looking newer for longer. Look at your sweater's tag to determine if your sweater is dry-clean only. The care tag will either be on the back of the collar or on the inside of one of the side seams.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • Towel
  • Home dry cleaning kit
  • Dryer

Hand Washing

  • Fill your sink with cold water.

  • Add several drops of laundry detergent according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Do not add more laundry detergent than needed as this will not enhance the cleaning process and will only make the sweater harder to rinse.

  • Place the sweater in the sink and submerge it completely. Let it sit there for at least 10 minutes.

  • Agitate the fibers of the sweater to remove stains and dirt. Pay special attention to the cuffs, collar and armpit areas of the sweater, as these tend to be dirtier than other areas.

  • Unplug the sink and squeeze out as much of the water as possible from the sweater.

  • Run cold water over the sweater. Squeeze the sweater during this process to rinse out the laundry detergent.

  • Lay the sweater out on a clean towel to dry. Turn the sweater so that it dries on all sides.

Dry Cleaning

  • Place the polo sweater in the dry cleaning bag.

  • Add a home dry cleaning kit.

  • Seal the bag and place it in the dryer.

  • Turn the dryer on to the appropriate setting and for the appropriate amount of time. This will depend on the manufacturer's directions.

  • Remove the sweater and hang it to cool so that wrinkles don't develop.
