Make a satin princess hat for hours of costume play.

You can make an elegant-looking princess cone hat at home for a birthday party, Halloween costume or for pretend play. The princess hat is simple to make and children can get involved by helping to decorate the cones with imitation gemstones, sparkles and ribbon. The hat utilizes a fusible fabric interfacing to provide a stiff material for a lasting costume accessory.

  • Angle compass
  • Fusible fabric interfacing (2 square feet)
  • Iron
  • Tulle netting (1 square foot)

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of satin fabric on a flat surface and use an angle compass with a pencil to draw a half circle with the pencil stretched out to 10 inches. Cut out the half circle. Use the half circle as a template to trace a half circle on a piece of fusible fabric interfacing and cut out the half circle.

    • 2

Put the fabric interfacing on top of the satin and then place a piece of scrap fabric on top of the interfacing. Use an iron to fuse the interfacing to the satin fabric. This will make the cone-shaped hat more rigid so that is stands up properly.

    • 3

Cut a piece of colorful tulle netting into a circle with a 10-inch diameter. Gather one end of the fabric together and glue it to the top of the curve in the satin fabric with fabric glue. Attach the tulle netting to the inside of the fabric, which is the side with the fusible fabric interfacing.

    • 4

Cut five or six 1-inch wide pieces of ribbon to a length of approximately 10 inches. Glue each of the ribbons together by applying glue to the bottom ribbon and placing another ribbon on top. Repeat until all of the ribbons have been glued together. As you glue, fan the ribbons out slightly so that the strands of ribbon are not directly on top of each other. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 5

Place the flat edge of the half-circle against the flat surface and wrap the satin into a cone shape. Place the cone shape on top of the child's head to adjust for size. Apply a thin line of glue along the outer edge of the satin and press firmly to secure the edge to the rest of the fabric. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 6

Wrap a length of 1-inch-wide ribbon around the bottom of the cone and cut the ribbon a 1/2-inch longer than the circumference of the cone. Apply a thin line of glue along the length of the ribbon and attach it to the bottom of the cone. Press firmly to smooth out any wrinkles and to align it along the bottom edge.

    • 7

Measure the distance from the bottom edge of the cone to the vertex of the cone. Cut five 1/2-inch-wide ribbons to this length and glue them evenly spaced out around the cone, from the bottom edge to the vertex. Allow the princess cone hat to dry for 30 to 60 minutes before wearing.
