Directions on How to Knit Christmas Tree Ornaments
Knitting Christmas tree ornaments is a fun way to create your own handcrafted decorations. They use very little yarn so you can use luxury yarns and flamboyant fibers (including metallics) that you might otherwise not use. You can create ornaments in many styles, from Victorian to classic, and find patterns online for every shape, including miniature stockings or yarn snowmen. You can also knit simple mini stockings, candy shapes or ball ornaments without a special pattern.

- Sport-weight in assorted colors and textures
- Additional scraps of yarn in other weights
- Needles, single-point and double-pointed, in size to work with yarn (consult label)
- Sock pattern
- Fiberfill
- Darning needle

Select your favorite sock pattern, available from most standard knitting pattern references, or online, if you are knitting a miniature stocking. Cast on and begin knitting according to the pattern instructions for your specific sock style. If you are knitting a simple ball or candy-shape pattern, you do not need a pattern. Simply cast on 10 to 20 stitches on your double-pointed needles and begin knitting in stockinette stitch.

Alternate different colors of yarn to create stripes. Don't worry about mixing different fibers and even weights of yarn. No one will wear the ornaments, so washing and shrinking won't be a problem. If working stockings, finish according to your pattern. If working a candy shape, work in a stripe pattern until the piece measures 6 inches. If working a ball shape, work in a stripe pattern until piece measures three inches. Cast off your piece.

Embroider holiday designs such as holly and berries on your stocking, candy shape, or ball ornament. To finish a ball ornament, run a length of yarn through the bottom using the darning needle, draw together tightly, and fasten off. Fill with fiberfill, and run another length of yarn through the top, draw together tightly, and fasten off. For a candy shape, tie a length of yarn into a bow two inches from the bottom, fill with fiberfill, and tie another length of yarn into a bow two inches from the top.

Attach a length of yarn to each ornament at the top to use as a hanger, using the darning needle. You can use matching or contrasting yarn.
